'By the example of its characters, a good book promotes fostering human morality, responsibility, patriotism, understanding, and self-sufficient personality. That is why the Oblast deputies together with the Oblast Culture Department decided to introduce the contest for the best reading family in Tomsk Oblast “Family Reading”.’
The majority of organization responsibilities were placed on the Tomsk Oblast Children’s and Youth Library. The Contest enabled to review the work with reading families, dynasties, focus on them, and involve them into the library activities as associates, like-minded people, and volunteers, rather than indifferent visitors.
Almost 100 families from 17 districts and 5 cities of Tomsk Oblast applied for participation. The families filled in the questionnaires and completed all the contest papers. In their creative works they reflected their feelings about favorite books, their role in modern life, on reading as means for psychological rebalancing, intelligence development and personal growth. The works were supplied with pictures, children’s drawings, advertisement leaflets, handicrafts.
As a result, 8 families were awarded in 5 categories.

The Contest was held to promote the role of books and libraries in the society, cultural events organization by developing family reading tradition.
The evaluation criteria of the reading families:
- Reading experience of the family in the library;
- Number of books and periodicals read by the family in 2007-2008;
- Participation of the family in the library activities: contests, holidays and other events;
- Free assistance rendered to the library: replenishment of library funds, books renewal, repair and improvement works in the library and in the adjacent territory;
- Number of families drawn in to the library;
- Diversity of reading preferences of the family (genres, subject);
- Creative works devoted to books and family reading.
