First Russian-Chinese timber facility opened in Tomsk Oblast

The Chinese partners have already invested in the Russian-Chinese forestry complex around 13bn rubles. By 2022, total investments will amount to 30bn rubles.

The first of ten plants opened in Asinovsky District of Tomsk Oblast. Before 2022, ten facilities worth more than 30bn rubles will be built.

In 2011, Russian-Chinese ZAO RosKitInvest started building a sawmill and a veneer plant in Tomsk Oblast. These projects were followed by a MDF board plant in 2012. Then China’s state-owned AVIC Forestry (belongs to AVIC International) joined the project as an investor. On Wednesday the first veneer plant opened in Tomsk Oblast.

“It is a great example of cooperation between Russia and China. It is an important milestone. We have had a successful trading experience with China but did not see much investment. Projects like this show that the situation is changing,” said Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich in the opening ceremony.

He noted that the government will continue supporting the project. Tomsk Oblast Governor Sergey Zhvachkin reminded that the Chinese partners had already invested in the forestry complex around 13bn rubles with a plan to have invested up to 30bn rubles by 2022.

“The forestry complex will include 10 facilities and a large infrastructure. It will boost the housing construction industry. The project will create 5,000 new jobs, which is very important for the region’s and the country’s social policy,” he said.

According to the Oblast Administration, the capacity of the first phase of the veneer plant will be 100,000 cu. m per year. The facility has already shipped small start-up batches of veneer to Korea and Japan. A 200,000 cu. m MDF plant and a 48 MW power house are in construction now. The site will also house production facilities for plywood, particleboard, laminate, and a furniture factory. The full ramp-up is scheduled for 2023. The total output of the complex by 2023 will be up to 1.7 cu. m.
