Radiology Canyon opened in Tomsk

Tomsk Radiology Canyon opened its doors on February 16. It was built by the Tomsk Housing Construction Company under the supervision by deputy of the Legislative Duma of Tomsk Oblast Aleksander Shpeter and the Standing Healthcare Committee of the Tomsk Oblast Duma chaired by deputy Tatiana Solomatina. The Radiology Canyon will increase access to cancer care 2.5 times.

The first patients will start arriving on February 25.

Construction was completed in December. Once fully licensed, the new cancer treatment center will start receiving patients. The Radiology Canyon is a full-fledged medical complex equipped with seven units of ‘heavy’ cancer diagnostics equipment.

In the opening ceremony Tomsk Oblast Governor Sergey Zhvachkin said, “We are going to increase access to cancer care 2.5 times. Today, no more than 800 patients get cancer treatment every year. With the opening of this radiology center we can offer modern treatment to more than 2,000 individuals.”

The new facility provides new opportunities in the treatment of cancer. Treatment procedures will take less time, which allows to receive 70% more patients and eliminate waiting time, and provides immediate access to specialized care.

Chief Physician of the Tomsk Cancer Detection Center Lev Kudyakov says that “the opening of the Canyon brings Tomsk to world class levels in cancer treatment.”

“The quality of our treatment will become comparable to that in Germany or Israel. The center has enough capacity to cover all those who need assistance.”

According to the Tomsk Cancer Detection Center, cancer mortality in the region in 2014 was 202.8 per 100,000 people, a small reduction compared to 2013. National average rate in 2014 was 201.7 per 100,000 people.

The region has been waiting for this center for 15 years. The foundations were laid back in 2000. However, there has always been lack of funding.

In 2013, Tomsk Oblast enrolled on the federal program and received over 500 million rubles. The region allocated 300 million rubles for the construction of the facility. Construction was resumed in November 2013. In 2013-2014, cutting edge technologies and equipment were purchased for the center, including 7 pieces of ‘heavy’ radiology equipment.
