The Legislative Duma of Tomsk Oblast

October 01, 2010. Youth Parliament of Tomsk Oblast met US diplomats

With Ruben Harutyunyan
On 29 September the core group of the Youth Parliament of Tomsk Oblast met with Ruben Harutyunyan, Second Secretary of the Political Section in the US Embassy, in the American Educational Information Center of the Research Library in the National Research Tomsk State University.

Among the visit goals in Tomsk the American diplomat wanted to learn about forms of youth involvement into public and political activities. Tomsk is among the leaders in implementing the youth policy. The essence and nature of activity led by the Youth Parliament of Tomsk Oblast was in the focus.

Currently, the USA has no groupings like Russian youth parliaments. Political parties have their own youth student clubs in the US colleges and universities. However, the level of the youth political subjectivity is much lower than that in Russia.

Background

The Political Section presents US foreign and security policy positions to the Government of the Russian Federation and interprets for Washington, Russia's major foreign, defense and security policies.

Also, the Political Section analyzes and reports on significant events and trends in Russian domestic politics (elections, political parties, Kremlin-regional relations, media, human rights etc.) in so far as they affect Russia's relationship with the US.

The section consists of three units: External Affairs, Political-Military Affairs, Internal Affairs.
