The Legislative Duma of Tomsk Oblast awarded the most actively reading families of the Oblast. The 3rd Family Reading Contest award ceremony was conducted in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Families from every corner of the region gathered in the room. For them reading is not just a habit or a hobby but a good family tradition.

At the first phase of the contest 99 families went to libraries, borrowed books and read a lot. But to win the contest just loving reading was not enough. One of the selection criteria was the family’s involvement in the library’s activity.

Family Reading

“When we were launching this contest three years ago we were in doubts if it could ever become popular,” says Igor Chernyshev, Chairman of the Labor and Social Policy Committee of the Legislative Duma. “But the first results of the contest had shown that we had been right. Every year the number of participants grows, and their creative work is becoming more and more interesting. Thank you so much, all of you, for the interest and support you have shown!”

At the second phase of the contest there were 37 families from 12 districts of Tomsk Oblast who had won the district and municipal family reading contests in 2012. The total reading record of some of the families is measured in dozens of years. In 2012, the Karbainovs from Melnikovo village, Shegarsky District, hold the highest score – 81 years!

At the final phase, an expert committee made up of Oblast deputies, heads of municipal and regional libraries, and representatives of the Oblast government joined the contest. Along with the three traditional prizes there were awards in five categories: “Family Reading”, “Today’s Book Tomorrow’s Destiny”, “I Have Read and Recommend”, “The Youngest Reading Family”, “Reading is Learning”. Also, 11 families and workers of municipal libraries who helped the contest participants were awarded Appreciation Letters of the Legislative Duma of Tomsk Oblast.
